Therapy, learning, enhancement, performance: four words that reveal the broad scope of this book; four words that are not just four separate subjects; revealing their interconnections is the main focus of this book. Subjects, ranging from C. Jung's psychoanalysis to K.A. Ericsson's Deliberate Practice, or from R.G. Hamer's "New Medicine" to the author's Distal Method, all these give a deeper meaning to the book's title – a fresh outlook on these overused words.

[…] Understanding is an emotion. When the structure is obvious, we call it logic. When the structure is not obvious, we call it intuition. You may train it (understanding, logic, intuition) and, for a successful life, you have totrain it. It is necessary to realize, now, how important understanding is. It is so personal, as much as very few other things are. It is our way of apprehending the world, our compass for navigating within our cosmos. In our educational systems, we let others tell us what we should understand, and they constantly correct what we have understood. That is so unfortunate. How can anyone tell me that what I feel is wrong
- Yes, I may need to work with my emotional world and make it better - whatever this “better” means. But understanding is too personal and too valuable to just reject one’s feelings by “correcting” them. The distal method of “correcting” emotions requires subtle manipulations and years of coordinated efforts within a stable environment under the supervision of inspirational individuals. […]

[…] But what about our performance-addiction
- Improving performance now is not optimal to improving performance in the long term, i.e. learning. People, we, want results fast, and that’s why we like proximal methods. Then, performance does not improve in the long term, and we wonder why. Ah, we know why: we are not talents! Only talents are able to improve so much. Right
- Of course not. The Talent Hypothesis is a double value judgment [6] to cover up our educational weaknesses. If we attempt to influence performance directly, we will fail - at least in the long run. We must create the suitable learning environment in order to achieve non-continuous changes, i.e. changes beyond the individual’s current capacities. Distal Method is based on multi- and intra-disciplinary findings that create such an environment, along with important insights borrowed from major traditions (martial arts, epistemology and music).
